Bogomolets National Medical University

The top medical university in Ukraine, according to the UNESCO rating, is the Bogomolets National MMBBS studying in Europeedical University in Kyiv. It is named in honour of physiologist Oleksandr Bogomolets (1881-1946) who was born and died in that country's capital city.

Bogomolets U. has faculties for General Medicine, Pediatrics (Child Medicine) and Preventive Care. Bogomolets NMU offers specializations in military medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and medical psychology. Some ten thousand undergraduate and postgraduate students are enrolled, including nearly a thousand international students from 50 countries. The university offers instruction in English.

Today the medical faculty is one of the numerous faculties of the medical university. About 2746 students are studying at 38 departments here. 484 foreigners are studying at the faculty as well. The teaching process is carried out by 500 teachers – academicians, professors, assistant professors, senior teachers and assistants. There are scientific schools, which are well-known in Ukraine as well as abroad.

The teachers of the medical faculty have done translations of a number of manuals from various languages into Ukrainian. A huge work was done according to the translations of textbooks from the following subjects: eye dis-eases, obstetrics, embryology, etc. into English language. And these materials are widely used by students of the leading medical universities of Europe and world on the whole. At the faculty departments, the actual trends of scientific investigations are in the process of elaborating, introducing and improving. At the affiliated hospitals of departments, 10 specialized centers of treatment are created.

The Students’ Scientific Society of the faculty is working progressively here. According to their choice students can join up with scientific research from even the first course. There students can acquire the professional skills of work with scientific literature. Beginning from the 2nd and 3rd years of study, at the departments of basic medical disciplines, students master the major principles of making experiments. And at the clinical departments they practice new methods of examination of patients, using the modern diagnostic equipment.

Scientific sessions are held in English. Bogomolets National Medical University More than four hundred students from Italy, NethMBBS studying in Europeerlands, Germany, Poland, Russia, Byelorussia, Lebanon and Yemen and almost of all higher medical institutions of Ukraine have a great wish to participate in these conferences.

Basic medical and humanitarian disciplines are studied in the first and the second years. From the third year starts the study of clinical disciplines. After the second and the third years students have the clinical practice fulfilling duties of the junior and medium medical personal; after the fourth and the fifth years students work as doctor’s assistants. After graduating from the University junior specialists continue postgraduate study in the internship at the faculty of the postgraduate education. Students who display interest in scientific work can get the department’s recommendation and can be directed by the Scientific Council of the University for further study in Postgraduate Training (Master’s Program, Residency, PhD Program).

Medical speciality

  • from the first to the fifth year faculty students study according to unified schedules and programs with the specialization in the sixth year. Specialization includes the profound study of Internal Diseases, Surgical Diseases, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Clinical Pharmacology and Immunology, Anesthesiology, Infectious Diseases.
  • after graduating from the university specialists can choose the following specialities: Surgery, Therapy, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Anesthesiology and Reanimatology, X-ray Diagnostics and Therapy, Ultra-sound Diagnostics and others.
  • Faculty of Post - Graduationbeginning from 2005/2006 Academic year our University has started participation in the so-called Bologna’ process.

Historical Information
1840 The Emperor Mykola 1 signed the rescript concerning organization of the Faculty of Medicine at Kyiv University of St. Volodymyr.
1841 The opening of the Faculty of Medicine of St. Volodymyr Kyiv University. On September 23 (9) professor Kozlov delivered the first lecture on anatomy. On September 26 (12) professor Karavayev delivered the first lecture on encyclopaedia and methodology of medicine.
1843 Professor Karavayev become the first Dean of the Faculty of Medicine.
1853 The opening of dissecting room.
1881 The Student's Scientific Society "Clinical society of the medical student" was organized. The student Kysil was the organizer of this Society. Later he was known as famous pediatrician and public figure.
1885 Surgical and therapeutic clinics were built.
1885 Obstetric clinic was built.
1888 Kyiv Institute of Health Care was built. This Institute unites the Faculty of Medicine of St. Volodymyr University. Medical Institute for Women and Faculty of Medicine of Ukrainian State University.
1920 Kyiv Institute of Health Care was renamed as Kyiv State Medical Academy.
1921 Kyiv State Medical Academy was renamed as Kyiv Medical Institute.
1921 Surgical and therapeutic clinics were built.
1930 Organization of the Faculties of Preventive Medicine, Preventive Sanitary and Pediatrics.
1941 Kyiv Medical Institute was evacuated to Kharkiv and later to Cheliabinsk.
1943 The Institute restarted its lectures in Kyiv.
1944 The Kyiv Medical Institute was rewarded by the order of the Red Banner.
1946 The Kyiv Medical Institute was named after the Academician O.O.Bogomolets, the President of the Academy of Sciences of Ukrainian SSR.
1965 The Museum of the History of Medicine on the basis of the Institute was organized. From 1982 it becomes the Museum of Medicine of Ukraine.
1992 The Institute was reorganized on the Ukrainian State Medical University after Academician O.O.Bogomolets.
1995 By the Order of the President of Ukraine the University was given the status of the O.O. Bogomolets National Medical University.
2011 Celebration of 170 anniversary of the National O.O.Bogomolets Medical University.

Hostel

The students’ hostels are located near the main academic buildings. Students can be accommodated in 8 hostels with everything needed for studying (including internet clubs and reading rooms), everyday life (with canteens, cafes, the sewing and footwear work-shops, the barber’s and the laundry open) and rest ( gyms available).
