The University of Waikatowas established in 1964 as the Hamilton Teachers' College. The petition for university status was passed in 1956 and the university was granted the status of a university in 1964. The university is a public higher education institution providing education and research. It is affiliated with the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), and many other leading associations.

The main campus of the university is located in Hamilton and covers an area of 158 acres. The campus is home to administrative offices, laboratories, and classrooms, as well as libraries, residences, and recreation facilities. The university also has a Tauranga satellite campus. The university’s library complex comprises three libraries across the campus.
